Glossary: Tax Reform Act

TRA (Tax Reform Act) – legislation passed in 1986 that made interest paid on a mortgage tax deductible instead of interest on consumer (credit card, sales tax) debt. This change made home ownership extremely advantageous and was a major factor in the popularity of subprime mortgages for those that couldn’t otherwise get on the property ladder.
