Judge Finds Mortgage Giant Harassed NH Woman

An Amherst, N.H., woman has won a $40,000 judgment against a mortgage giant after a judge ruled the firm harassed her by making at least 200 collection calls to her home in a year.

Rosemary Gilroy acted as her own lawyer and sued Americaquest Mortgage Co.

In a ruling Thursday, U.S. District Judge Joseph DiClerico said Gilroy proved the company harassed her with repeated calls, and ordered it to pay her $40,000.

The Telegraph reports Gilroy charged that the company violated state and federal debt collection law by harassing her while trying to collect overdue mortgage payments, sometimes calling several times a night for about a year.
